How to View Public Instagram Content Responsibly

Public access makes content visible; it does not remove the creator’s privacy interests, copyright, or right to control future availability.

Respect the purpose of the original post

View public content in the context in which it was shared. Avoid using photos or videos to harass, impersonate, embarrass, or misrepresent the creator. If a creator removes an item or makes an account private, do not look for ways around that decision.

Copyright still applies

Publicly visible media is not automatically free to republish. Before reposting, editing, selling, or using someone else’s work in a project, obtain permission or confirm that your use is allowed under the laws that apply to you. Attribution alone may not be enough.

Be cautious with downloads

Save media only when the source permits it and you have a legitimate reason. Keep personal or sensitive material secure, and do not upload it to other services without the creator’s consent. Avoid collecting large archives of another person’s activity.

Protect your own account

A public-content viewer should not need your Instagram password. Never enter credentials into an unfamiliar viewer, install unknown browser extensions, or complete surveys that request personal information in exchange for access.
