How Instagram Stories, Highlights, and Posts Differ

Instagram uses several formats for sharing photos and video. Knowing how each one works helps you understand what may be publicly available.

Stories are temporary by design

A story is a photo or video shared through the story tray rather than the permanent profile grid. Stories normally remain active for about 24 hours unless the account owner deletes them earlier or saves them to a highlight. Availability can change at any time because the creator keeps control of the original content.

Highlights preserve selected stories

Highlights are collections chosen by the account owner and displayed beneath the profile biography. Unlike active stories, highlights can remain visible until the owner edits or removes them. A public profile may have many highlights, no highlights, or highlights that change over time.

Posts and reels live on the profile

Posts generally appear in the profile grid and may contain one image, multiple images, or video. Reels are short-form videos with their own viewing experience. Public visibility does not transfer ownership: the creator still owns or controls the media they publish.

Public does not mean permanent

An account can become private, remove individual items, restrict a viewer, or change regional and age-based availability. A responsible viewer should treat all content as temporary and respect the choices of the person who shared it.
